Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopy is surgery carried out with a camera and fine instruments passed through a few small openings in the abdominal wall. The same operations can be done openly; the difference with the keyhole approach is less tissue trauma and a shorter recovery.
Operations suited to the keyhole approach
- Removal of an ovarian cyst
- Removal of fibroids (myomectomy)
- Excision of endometriosis and division of adhesions
- Surgery for ectopic pregnancy
- Hysterectomy
- Assessment of the tubes and tubal ligation
- Investigation of pelvic pain of unexplained origin
Advantages
- Small incisions and less pain
- Shorter hospital stay
- Earlier return to daily life
- Fewer adhesions and smaller scars
- Magnified view allowing precise work
Is it suitable for everyone?
No. Very large masses, extensive previous adhesions, certain heart and lung conditions and suspected malignancy may make open surgery the sounder choice. The decision is discussed before the operation, taking examination, imaging and laboratory results together.
After the operation
Getting up and walking on the first day is expected; it helps the bowel recover and reduces the risk of clots. Pain felt at the tip of the shoulder comes from the gas used during surgery and settles within a few days.
Avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous activity is usually advised for some weeks; the exact period depends on the operation performed.
