Gynaecological Examination and Well-Woman Check
A regular gynaecological check is advisable even in the absence of symptoms. The great majority of conditions such as cervical cancer can be picked up by screening long before they cause any complaint.
What the visit involves
- Review of symptoms and menstrual pattern
- Gynaecological examination
- Ultrasound assessment of the uterus and ovaries
- Smear (PAP) test and HPV testing where indicated
- Breast examination and referral for imaging if required
- Blood tests and bone density assessment according to need
How often?
For adult women without symptoms, an annual review is a reasonable general rule. The interval for smear and HPV screening depends on age and previous results: it may be extended when results are normal and shortened if a finding is uncertain.
Symptoms that should not be left
- A sudden change in menstrual pattern or bleeding between periods
- Bleeding after intercourse
- Any bleeding after the menopause
- Persistent pelvic pain, swelling or bloating
- Discharge with odour or change in colour, itching
- Burning on passing urine and recurrent urinary infections
Preparing for the visit
If a smear is planned, choose a day when you are not menstruating and avoid vaginal medication or douching for a few days beforehand. Bringing a list of your medication and any previous test results makes the assessment easier.
